Tristan Connolly - UFC Professional MMA Athlete
Tristan “Boondock” Connelly is a Professional Mixed Martial Artist from Victoria and the head coach at Check Mat Vancouver.
Tristan started his MMA journey in jiu-jitsu then soon discovered he had an interest in striking. His first professional MMA fight was in 2010 and he continues to climb the ranks of the world’s lightweight division. Tristan puts an unrelenting pace on his opponents which leads to exciting fights.
Tristan shocked the world on his UFC debut on September 14, 2019 when he stepped up a weight-class on 5 days’ notice to fight the highly talented Michel Pereira who did not make weight. Tristan won the fight by unanimous decision in front of his hometown crowd at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Tristan will share his journey from Vancouver Island to the highest stage in Mixed Martial Arts and how coaching and inspiring others became an important part of this.

Guy Le Masurier, PhD
Guy Le Masurier, PhD is the lead author of Fitness for Life Canada, a research fellow of SHAPE America, and a former strength and conditioning coach with the Los Angeles Kings Hockey Club.
Guy is grateful for the opportunity to teach and learn with his students on traditional Snuneymuxw territory in the Kinesiology program at Vancouver Island University. Guy is passionate about sharing his knowledge of exercise science and nutrition, as well as leading students and athletes in movement settings.
Coaches Workshop: Talk Less, Coach More
Use less words, coach more effectively! Simplify and enhance your coaching practice in this active, hands-on session. This upbeat workshop is designed to provide you with masterful coaching techniques that you can quickly learn and use immediately to more efficiently develop your athletes’ skills. Specifically, coaches will learn how to maximize practice time using a variety of evidence-based techniques and perform quality demonstrations that focus training sessions and support the delivery of specific feedback. The skills learned in this session can be used by coaches and teachers in all movement settings and with athletes and students of all ages.
Antoinette is a physiotherapist who works at Port Alberni Physiotherapy Clinic, with training in exercise based therapy, manual therapy, strength and conditioning and pelvic floor rehabilitation. She has a Bachelors in Physical and Health Education from Nipissing University where she competed with the varsity cross-country team. After graduation she went on to work as an Exercise Physiologist and Kinesiologist with the Canadian Armed Forces and Strathcona Regional District. Antoinette then decided to pursue further education and obtained her Masters in Physical Therapy at McGill University. During her time at McGill she played with the university's woman's ultimate team.
Ashley Cross Certified Athletic Therapist, CAT(C)
Ashley attended Douglas College and finished her degree at Camosun College
Ashley was a competitive wrestler and was a three time Provincial Champion, Junior National Champion and placed in the top 10 in Junior World Championships
Her passion is the study of movement and anatomy with a focus on functional fitness, ultimately to prevent injury and gain a healthy fit body for life.
Bethan Greydanus is a Sports Nutritionist who is passionate about educating coaches and athletes on the best way nutrition can assist them to meet their performance goals. Bethan recently completed her Masters in Sports Nutrition from the University of Stirling in Scotland and holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Nutrition from the International Olympic Committee. She has competed all over Canada in Figure Skating and has been coaching students for over 15 years in Canada and the United Kingdom. Having been personally affected in the past with issues obtaining accurate nutritional information and then seeing many other athletes with the same struggles, Bethan was inspired to pursue sports nutrition to help support other athletes to reach their full potential.
Travis is a former multiple national wrestling champion and 2008 Olympian who began his wrestling career in Alberni in 1992 and whose Olympic journey captured national interest.
