This past Thursday October 19th, 2023, Pacific Sport Vancouver Island, alongside the Nanaimo Brain Injury Society (NBIS) hosted a workshop on Concussion Awareness lead by Dr. Jamie Dunnett. The workshop started with an introduction from Pacific Sport’s Athlete & Coach Service Manager, Kevin Lindo where he invited the attendees to get in contact with us, to create more workshops that the Vancouver Island community would find useful in their sports, academic or work careers.

Dr. Jamie started his part by showing two concussion examples in sports, one of them was the example of Taylor Arbour, a former varsity athlete from VIU (who would later share his experience from the moment it happened, to the weeks that followed). The workshop not only provided real life examples, but also the history of concussion, and how research has developed more ways to identify concussion and treat it, to have a full recovery.

One of the highlights of the night was this quote made by Dr. Jamie, “If there is one thing you should take home from today, always assume it is a concussion, and treat it as such”.

Pacific Sport Vancouver Island and the Nanaimo Brain Injury Society would like to thank all the attendees and hope to bring more workshops like this to the Vancouver Island community.
